Behavioral Health Wellness Environments for Living and Learning (BH WELL) partnered with LexEnd Homelessness and Eastern State Hospital for LexCount! LexCount was a night where the Lex End Homelessness Continuum of Care (CoC) used teams of volunteers to visit dozens of outdoor locations where persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness might be found overnight.

LexCount was held on January 25, 2023 from 10 PM – 11:59 PM. BH WELL joined one of four teams from Eastern State Hospital. The teams conducted a count of the number of individuals and households identified as being without shelter, completed surveys with those identified, facilitated access to emergency shelter, and distributed care packages.

According to the Housing and Urban Development 2022 Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance data, of the 1,084 unsheltered and 2,900 sheltered (counted in emergency shelters or transitional housing), 654 people have experienced severe mental illness and 519 have experienced chronic substance abuse in the past year. Experiencing homelessness may worsen existing mental or behavioral health challenges and may increase not only sleeplessness but also anxiety, depression, and substance use.
