When people think of the intensive care unit (ICU), they often think of ventilators, alarms, and critically ill patients. While the ICU focuses on lifesaving care, emotional well-being is also an important part of healing.  

 

Animal-assisted interventions (AAI), such as therapy dog visits, are becoming increasingly recognized in healthcare settings. Research has shown that therapy dogs may help reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation among critically ill patients. A review published in AACN Advanced Critical Care found that AAIs may improve emotional outcomes and support patients experiencing stress and delirium in the ICU (Malik, 2021). 

 

For patients, interacting with a therapy dog can provide comfort, familiarity, and a sense of connection during a difficult hospitalization. These visits may remind patients of home and offer a brief distraction from the stress of critical illness. 

 

Recently, hospitals around the world have begun exploring therapy dog programs in intensive care settings. In Barcelona, Spain, an ICU launched a therapy dog initiative to support emotional well-being among critically ill patients. Staff involved in the program observed improvements in patient morale and emotional connection during hospitalization. 

 

While infection prevention and patient safety remain essential considerations, studies have shown that with proper screening, hygiene protocols, and trained therapy-animal teams, AAIs can be implemented safely within healthcare settings. 

 

As healthcare continues to evolve, there is growing recognition that healing extends beyond physical treatment alone. Sometimes, a comforting paw and a moment of connection can make a meaningful difference in the ICU environment.
